Working in Canada: Workplace Expectations, Employment Skills and Success for Newcomers to Canada

Please note, this workshop is designed for newcomers and immigrants who have a foundational understanding of English, or enough English to understand the information presented.

In Canada, workplace expectations may sometimes be quite different to other countries and cultures. To succeed, Newcomers to Canada should be familiar with the expected etiquette for working harmoniously with co-workers, colleagues and supervisors, including an understanding of potential cross-cultural differences in the workplace.

Closely connected to “workplace expectations” is the need to know about health and safety awareness that can help prevent injury and illness in Canadian workplaces. This workshop addresses the rights and responsibilities that are essential knowledge in today’s Canadian workplace.

As well, in many countries, your qualifications and skills (hard skills) are the most important thing to finding work. In the Canadian labour market, soft skills (e.g. communication, listening and conflict resolution skills) are more often the determining factor in you finding and retaining work.
The “hard skills” will show your ability to do the job whereas your “soft skills” will show potential employers that you will be a good fit, working with the existing team and communicating with customers or clients.

This workshop teaches important considerations, techniques, and best practices, that will help Newcomers to Canada to showcase their soft skills for success in attaining and retaining employment.
